SJC Study Group
Sunday, December 17, 2017 • 29 Kislev 5778
3:00 PM - 4:00 PMSummit HillThe SJC Jewish Studies group--"The Book Club"-- meets in the usual place: the Chai room (the penthouse) of the Summit. This month we shall be reading about and later discussing Jewish humor--what it is, why it is, where it is, and who's responsible for it. There's no one book in the library that has enough copies to go around, so feel free to choose any of the following or any other that's relevant:
- Let There Be Laughter: A Treasury of Great Jewish Humor and What It Means, Michael Krasny
- No Joke: Making Jewish Humor, Ruth Wisse
- Jewish Comedy: A Serious History, Jeremy Dauber
- Dead Funny: Humor in Hitler’s Germany, Rudolf Herzog
- Filled with Laughter: A Fiesta of Jewish Folk Humor, Israel Goldberg
- Jewish Humor, Avner Ziv (ed.)
- Laugh for God's Sake: Where Jewish Humor and Jewish Ethics Meet, StanleySchachter
- The Haunted Smile: The Story of Jewish Comedians in America, Lawrence Epstein
- The Comic Image of the Jew: Explorations of a Pop Culture Phenomenon, Sig Altman
I know what you're thinking: Jews and humor? What is there to say about it? Well, you'll find out if you join us on December 17.
