Webinar Jews in Popular Culture - Hollywood's American Dream as a mask.

Thursday, February 18, 2021 6 Adar 5781

8:00 PM - 9:00 PMOnline

In our pursuit of the intersections with other marginalized groups we have looked at other immigrant groups interacting with Jews as gangsters, especially the Italians and to a lesser extent the Irish. African Americans are a marginalized nativist group interacting with Jewish torch singers, vaudeville, Tin Pan Alley and Broadway. We can now turn to mainstream American culture. This is what looking at Hollywood does for us, the place where Jews built the image of the American Dream in film. The dream that has no Jews in it. The immigrant Jewish movie moguls who built Hollywood were creating new identities for themselves, even as they were creating an idealized vision of American life for the general viewing public.
