Humanistic Seder Plate
What items will you find on a humanistic Seder plate?
- Karpas - green vegetable (typically parsley)
- Charoset - mixture of fruit, wine/honey, and nuts (typically apples, wine and walnuts)
Allergic to nuts? Substitute walnuts with dried fruit or seeds - Maror - bitter herb (typically horseradish)
- Hazeret - second bitter herb (typically lettuce)
- Zeroa - shankbone (typically lamb)
Vegetarian? Substitute with beet - Beitzah - hard-boiled eggs
Vegetarian? Substitute with white mushroom or avocado - Modern meaningful items you can add:
- Oranges representing women and LGBTQ+ people, who have been historically othered within the Jewish community
- Olives representing the wish for peace from the plague for war
- Potatoes representing POC in the Jewish community, and the struggle of starvation faced by those forcibly displaced/deported
