Tu Bishvat Seder and Environmental Action Event

Sunday, February 1, 2026 14 Shevat 5786

10:00 AM - 2:00 PMNatural reserve in Seattle (TBD)

SJC is proud to be collaborating once again with Green Seattle Partnership (GSP) to bring you our annual Secular Humanistic Tu Bishvat event. Join the Circle for a brief standing seder amongst nature, a tree-planting ceremony, and finally an environmental action event to restore a local natural area in Seattle, led by a trained GSP steward.

At this time, we're still coordinating with our assigned GSP steward to select a natural area to restore. We will post location and meet-up location soon!

FAQ: What distinguishes a traditional Tu Bishvat from a secular humanist one?

Here is our itinerary:

  • 10am: Check-in and safety overview
  • 10:30am: Standing seder with fruit, nuts and juice
  • 11am: Ceremonial tree-planting
  • 11:30am: Invasive species removal and planting of new trees and other approved greenery*
  • 1:45pm: Cleanup

* Attendees are NOT required to participate in the environmental action portion of the event if they don't want to or are unable to. You are more than welcome to attend exclusively for the seder and ceremony.

Accessibility information:

  • Bear in mind that this event takes place outside in Seattle in early February...it will be chilly, and may potentially be wet from recent or current rain, or even frozen from snow, making the ground unstable. Dress accordingly!
  • As this event takes place on an undeveloped natural area, although the ground is flat in the area we'll be working, there are no paved paths or places to sit on-site.
  • Gardening tools and gloves will be provided, but the gloves will not be heavy-duty. If you are concerned about thorns or have any plant sensitivities/allergies, you may need to bring your own gloves to use.
  • There are no bathrooms on site, but there is a gender-neutral portable toilet station within walking distance, and one of SJC's Board members (who lives just a few streets away from the site) has graciously offered to escort people to/from their home to use the restroom as needed during the event.
  • Natural area is dog-friendly.
  • Parking & public transit details to be added once we have secured a location!**

** As registration for this event is being managed by our host, GSP, we will not find out who needs rides through our registration form; please contact us if you will need a ride to/from this event.
