The Secular
Jewish Circle of Puget Sound (SJC), established in 1994, is a vibrant, active and diverse community that offers a meaningful secular alternative to Jewish life. SJC identifies with Humanistic Judaism, a significant movement established 45 years ago that has grown to include supporters on five continents. Rooted in a philosophy that has been debated by Jewish scholars since the 19th century, this movement has been indentified with some of the most famous Jewish thinkers of modern times.
Humanistic Judaism offers a non-theistic approach to Jewish identity and culture, and is a distinct alternative to Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist Judaism.
At SJC, Judaism thrives through tradition, community and education. Our connection to Humanism reminds us that people have the strength and responsibility to change and enrich their own lives and the world around them.
Our intergenerational community includes Jewish individuals and couples, children, interfaith and multi-cultural families, gay men and lesbians. Members come from enormously different backgrounds and influences, but all share the desire to explore Jewish identity, history and culture in a positive, non-theistic setting.
